We just want to let you in on a HALO "first".

Jackie and Jaya were rescued from a Missouri auction on April 27, 2007.  They were both about 2-3 years old.  The auction said that "Jackie" had been "running with" a male Havanese.  That is often stated because it implied the dog might be pregnant so it causes the bidding to go higher.  Usually HALO is not able to get one of these females out but thanks to Karie, a valued HALO member in MO., both she and Jaya were brought to freedom.

It was several weeks before the vet was able to confirm that Jackie indeed was pregnant and expecting 6 puppies.  It was understood that she would be transferred to Cindy in Ohio who is a vet tech and experienced in birthing puppies.  Sadly, Cindy had a death in her family and had to go to another state.  Pat (in Michigan) agreed to care for Jackie until Cindy returned.  Cindy was due back in town 8 days before Jackie was to give birth.

Well, the one thing in life that you can depend on is:  there is nothing in life you can depend on. :)
Life is full of surprises and so was Jackie.  8 days early she went into labor.  Another HALO first was about to take place:  Pat was going to assist Jackie in having her puppies.  Pat had NEVER done this before.  Although she has given birth herself, she knew this was not going to be the same experience and was extremely nervous about the entire “blessed event.”  Jackie, true to form as she had already given birth five times before she turned 3 years old, basically laughed at Pat and told her “Never mind, honey, I can manage this just fine.”  So Pat stayed with her for the 3 hours and was the rooting section.  With the help of Cindy (long distance on the phone) little Jackie gave birth to 7 puppies, 6 survived and are thriving - mewing and squirming around the whelping box - they look like pinto beans with feet!

I hope you will enjoy the pictures below and share in our joy that 6 little lives were born in freedom!

Look carefully at the 2nd picture.  If you look closely, you will see a small smile on Jackie's face.  It is mostly from love for her babies (she is a very good momma) but a little bit because Pat just whispered to her that she never has to go through this again.  Jackie's new momma is already waiting for her and soon she will become a pampered princess.....just as she deserves.
