Nate's Story
Back Home Up Next

Home

Well, it has been one year since I flew to Detroit and adopted Nate who is now known as Nate the Great.  Nate, who was a little shy at first is now my little buddy.  Each night when I come home from work I must sit in the yard while he sits in my lap and has his back rubbed and is talked to.  Then he gets down to wander in the yard.  When it is dark he is in just the little yard, but in light he has a great big yard.  For entertainment he chases wild cats and squirrels.  Of course when he gets near them he goes in the opposite direction.

After I get in the house it is time to watch the news and play, chase the toy, or tug a war with the toy which takes a while as he has two baskets full.  The best toys however are hidden under the bed or recliner chair.  At least once a night he jumps up and has his back rubbed.  Nate and my inherited calico cat Tammy are in constant conflict over my attention.  The parakeet looks at them like he thinks they are both nuts.

Nate's other entertainment is watching for the raccoons at night on the other side of the fence and then he runs out and pretends he is Cujo.  The raccoons on the other side of the fence totally ignore him.

He goes to bed around 8 or 9 every evening by himself.  I get up early in the morning and have to wake him up so he has time to go out before I go to work.  He is a lazy bones.  He sleeps totally under the covers and has to lay right next to me at night.

Nate always had training problems and he still has issues when I am not home but when home he comes right up and lets me know he has to go outside.

What he loves the most is when his cousin Cassie comes to visit.  (she is another Halo rescue).  Both Nate and Cassie have been enormous blessings to our family.  My daughter Caroline lost her precious 2 month old daughter Emma due to the total negligence of her babysitter and it was a tremendous, traumatic lost for all of us.  Caroline's 2 year old Ellie is allergic to dogs so Caroline started looking for nonallergic dogs for Ellie as Ellie had suffered tremendously because of the loss of her sister. Then Caroline saw the Halo adoption group and right away thought of our little angel Emma.  I think both families agree now that Nate and Cassie were sent to us by Emma via. The Halo adoption group.  These little Havanese angels made us smile when we thought we no longer could smile. They made us laugh when we thought we no longer could laugh.  They rescued us, when we thought we had rescued them.
