ABOUT HALO
HALO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all-volunteer rescue organization dedicated to the survival and care of Havanese dogs. We have no paid staff and no shelter facility. Our work is carried out by dedicated volunteers and foster homes.
Since HALO was formed in 2002, we have rescued over 1,700 Havanese.
Most of our rescues come from puppy mills, with a smaller number coming from animal shelters or owner surrenders. Mills do not want to feed dogs they are no longer considered “profitable” — they may be too old to sell, no longer producing litters, or have medical needs the mill is unwilling to address. Mills surrender these dogs to HALO - we do not purchase dogs.
As long as a foster home is available, we rescue every Havanese we can. We provide needed medical care and carefully choose adopters based on the best fit for each individual dog. Most of our income goes directly to veterinary care for the dogs we rescue.
Until adoption, our fosters help them learn what it means to be safe, loved, and free.
The resilience of this breed, and their ability at any age to move beyond the hardships of life in a mill and become loving family pets, is truly amazing. Our work will continue until laws are changed to ban puppy mills throughout the country.
