What Should I Feed My HALO Rescue?
There is no single perfect food for every dog. HALO expects adopters to feed their dogs a good-quality, nutritious diet that works well for their individual dog’s age, health, size, and needs.
You do not need to buy the most expensive food, but very low-cost foods are often lower quality. Because Havanese are small and eat modest portions, a better-quality food is usually still affordable.
Choose a food with a clearly named protein source, such as chicken, beef, lamb, turkey, or fish, near the top of the ingredient list. Avoid foods that rely heavily on fillers, artificial colors, artificial flavors, or vague ingredients such as “meat” or “animal” by-products.
Havanese should be fed twice a day to help keep their blood sugar levels consistent. If feeding dry food, a small-bite kibble may be easier for them to chew. Some Havanese are picky or may skip a meal occasionally, so avoid changing foods too often unless there is a health reason.
We recommend checking DogFoodAdvisor.com and aiming for a food rated 4 or 5 stars, while remembering that even a highly rated food may not be the best choice for every dog.
Treats should also be healthy and limited. Small pieces of dog-safe vegetables or fruit can be good options, but never give grapes or raisins, which are toxic to dogs.
The food you choose is one of the important ways you support your HALO dog’s health, comfort, and quality of life.
